Radiocarbon dating is one of the most widely used scientific dating methods in archaeology and environmental science. It can be applied to most organic materials and spans dates from a few hundred years ago right back to about 50, years ago – about when modern humans were first entering Europe. For radiocarbon dating to be possible, the material must once have been part of a living organism. This means that things like stone, metal and pottery cannot usually be directly dated by this means unless there is some organic material embedded or left as a residue.

Replicate cores of annually laminated varved sediments have been used to test the accuracy and precision of chronologies of lake sediment accumulation over the last years, based on AMS 14C measurements. Only the single terrestrial macrofossil and the fine, unidentified residual particulate fraction provide dates close to the true age of the sediments. The results also show that age discrepancies for some fractions are not constant over time. The age discrepancies may arise from some carbon reservoir effect within the aquatic ecosystem, from resuspension and focusing of older marginal organic material into the deepest part of the lake or from some combination of these processes.

Pottery is one of the most commonly recovered artefacts from archaeological sites. Despite more than a century of relative dating based on typology and seriation 1 , accurate dating of pottery using the radiocarbon dating method has proven extremely challenging owing to the limited survival of organic temper and unreliability of visible residues Here we report a method to directly date archaeological pottery based on accelerator mass spectrometry analysis of 14 C in absorbed food residues using palmitic C and stearic C fatty acids purified by preparative gas chromatography We present accurate compound-specific radiocarbon determinations of lipids extracted from pottery vessels, which were rigorously evaluated by comparison with dendrochronological dates 9,10 and inclusion in site and regional chronologies that contained previously determined radiocarbon dates on other materials Notably, the compound-specific dates from each of the C and C fatty acids in pottery vessels provide an internal quality control of the results 6 and are entirely compatible with dates for other commonly dated materials.
Accurate radiocarbon dating of pottery vessels can reveal: 1 the period of use of pottery; 2 the antiquity of organic residues, including when specific foodstuffs were exploited; 3 the chronology of sites in the absence of traditionally datable materials; and 4 direct verification of pottery typochronologies. Here we used the method to date the exploitation of dairy and carcass products in Neolithic vessels from Britain, Anatolia, central and western Europe, and Saharan Africa.

After analysing organic residues from ancient pots, a team of scientists led by the University of Bristol, including members of the School of Chemistry, has uncovered new evidence of dairying by hunter-gatherers in the landlocked South African country of Lesotho in the mid-late first millennium AD.
At one site in particular — Likoaeng — domestic animal bones were found in association with an Early Iron Age potsherd and some fragments of iron. In the past five years however, several studies have sequenced DNA from supposed domestic animal bones from these highland sites, and instead found them to belong to wild species.
This led to the suggestion that the presence of domestic animals in the highlands, and therefore the level of contact, had been overestimated, yet the zooarchaeologists involved stand by their original morphological assessment of the bones. The team found that dairy residues were present in approximately a third of the hunter-gatherer pots. They directly radiocarbon dated a dairy residue from Likoaeng to AD — and another from Sehonghong to AD — The stable carbon isotopic values of dairy residues from the agricultural site clearly reflect the introduction of crops such as maize and sorghum into the region in the late nineteenth century and the foddering of domestic animals upon them.
As the hunter-gatherer groups must have learnt animal husbandry techniques, the results support the notion that hunter-gatherer groups in the highlands of Lesotho had on-going contact with farming communities in the lowlands, rather than just obtaining the animals through raids or long-distance exchange networks.
